Last weekend Andrew Davis moved over from the Lyric Opera to conduct Paul Lewis and the CSO in Beethoven PCs 1/4 with two short Tippett works. The Beethoven was very good, with the great slow movement of the Fourth working it’s magic, but the two Tippet works were the highlight for me due to their unfamiliarity. The first was a neoclassical string Concerto Grosso type piece, apparently inspired by the Brandenburg Concertos, and the last was a later work involving Brass and Percussion from decades later where the music is arranged non sequentially, and reminded me a great deal of the Messiaen works that I have been enjoying recently.
