Paul Lewis, Andrew Davis, Beethoven and Tippett

Last weekend Andrew Davis moved over from the Lyric Opera to conduct Paul Lewis and the CSO in Beethoven PCs 1/4 with two short Tippett works. The Beethoven was very good, with the great slow movement of the Fourth working it’s magic, but the two Tippet works were the highlight for me due to their unfamiliarity. The first was a neoclassical string Concerto Grosso type piece, apparently inspired by the Brandenburg Concertos, and the last was a later work involving Brass and Percussion from decades later where the music is arranged non sequentially, and reminded me a great deal of the Messiaen works that I have been enjoying recently.

Thought I would add the detail:
" Tippett’s Little Music for String Orchestra and Praeludium for Brass, Bells, and Percussion".

I like both of these but particularly the brass and percussion one. I suppose Tippett included bells in the title, as they have a prominent part.

I really liked the trumpet parts as well as the percussion

Took me a while to work out that typo.

There aren't too many recordings that have both pieces on, but they feature in this bargain box, which might appeal if you want to explore works by Tippett other than his symphonies:

Thanks. I might just download the two works from the Concert and then explore further. Any recommendations on the String Quartets?
