I couldn't stand the way she scooped up to top notes, nor the vibrato: I switched off.

I also don't think, given the content, Winterreise works with a femaie voice.

We watched her do it at the Wigmore a few years ago and were riveted. I found myself not enjoying her latest performance so much over the radio. Some lovely touches and she is really inside the music but I didn't find her voice quite so appealing (especially at the top) this time around.

I would agree that her voice is not perfect . Some of her low notes sound a bit odd - almost as if it’s a different singer. Yes there was some duff intonation from time to time . But , if I may be permitted the comparison , rather like Callas I would swop quite a lot of technical perfection for this level of passionate commitment. The range and colour of her voice was astonishing and her portrayal of the Wanderer falling to pieces psychologically was unrivalled . This was very different from the beautiful sounding but slightly bland baritones and tenors who have made the cycle their own recently. And as for Drake’s piano playing ...what a master.
