Because I was slow in catching the video, or at least bits of it, I didn't realize until after everyone else here that Nelsons himself took the trumpet solo in the Lumbye selection. The US announcer didn't say a word, that I remembered. Petroc obviously didn't have to mention it, as his audio commentary was for both the R3 relay and the TV relay.
Maybe not a VPO New Year's Concert for the ages, but very enjoyable still, and never having seen Nelsons live, or anything in the way of video, I did get a sense of why so many orchestras like Nelsons, given his friendly personality. (He does perhaps need to watch his weight, though.)

What do you make of the choice of Muti 2021 BSP?
Maybe Jansons booked? Somehow it didn’t seem Muti’s turn.

"When I was first asked to do the New Year’s concert, for several weeks I said 'no' and refused to accept because I thought this concert should be conducted by conductors who have the music of the Strauss family or Lanner or Suppé in their blood. I asked, 'Why should a Neapolitan be on the podium in the Musikverein on the first of January? I am from Napoli, I am not from Vienna.'"
I haven't the faintest idea if Jansons was booked for 2021. His last concert with the VPO was in June 2019 at the Elbphilharmonie, not long before he had cancelled his summer dates (including the BRSO Proms dates). I'm sure that the VPO would have loved to get him back at some point, but he might well have started looking the worse for wear even by then. I saw Jansons' final Berlin PO concert in the Digital Concert Hall, dating from a few months earlier in 2019, and in hindsight, the signs of his final phase were starting to kick in even then. By the time of his October 2019 final concerts in NYC, from the photos that I saw, he looked pretty ghastly, and by all accounts, barely got through that 1st NYC concert before having to pull out of the 2nd Carnegie concert. In other words, as much as the VPO may have wanted him back for the New Year's concert down the line, they saw the writing on the wall.
For Barbirollians' comment on MG-T: I think that she would be a terrific choice for the VPO, down the line. However, this is a case of her having to walk before running, so to speak, because MG-T has never conducted the VPO, from a look at the VPO's concert archive. Intuitively, I think that the VPO has her in mind for a future date in a regular concert, on the basis of her reputation and status. I did hear a while back that MG-T had been booked for something like 5 years ahead in general, which was admittedly before her 1st pregnancy, and now her 2nd pregnancy and her COVID-19 situation. Even without all these complications, if it does happen that MG-T one day gets the VPO's New Year's concert, it won't be for a good long while, IMHO.

He himself has stated, in this feature that I've posted elsewhere (i.e. for the 2018 thread), about first being invited for the 1993 concert, even if there is a bit of "shtick" about this statement, kind of in line with his personality:
Clearly, Muti is smart enough to know how good an opportunity this was, and is, over the years. Plus, he has a long history of conducting the VPO, probably longer than any conductor active now, with Haitink retired (and strictly chronologically speaking, Muti first conducted the VPO (in 1971, at the Salzburg Festival) before Haitink (1972 at the Musikverein). Muti evidently knows the VPO's ways, and vice versa, so that they presumably get along with each other just fine. As well, Muti is 79 this year, so no doubt he wants to enjoy the opportunities while he can.
