Yes I know what you mean, but later on the Brahms was outstanding. In my opinion this was the highlight and well worth listening to if you can.

I've just caught up with this - as you say, it's a fine performance.

I wanted to like it, but felt the tempos were sluggish and that Brahms' inspiration never fully took wing, particularly since the first part of the concert was quite outstanding. I still return to the recording made by members of the Berlin Philharmonic back in the day, and the Stern, Ma, Laredo sometime ensemble for a true understanding of this mercurial masterpiece.
