That's right, Richard...much of it features Savall's earlier recordings for the EMI Reflexe label. But a very good way to get all those long-deleted discs packaged together, and of course with the voice of Montserrat Figueras.

I'm guessing the increasingly complex music of late 19th century and 20th century music did not lend itself to improvisation, and it didn't show itself until later in the 20th century, having however in the meantime been doing very well for itself in Jazz Music.

Not that it matters very much, I wonder where Jordi stands in the scale of great improvisers?

You are not familiar with the improvisatory work of the likes of Messiaen or Cardew, I take it, or a certain Richard Barrett, come to that.

No, I'm not; but thanks for the information; I wonder if any such improvisations have been recorded?

In my previous post, I was just quoting Jordi Savall as to Mozart and Liszt. I would certainly agree that in the latter part of the 20th century, improvisation was frequently to be found in new compositions.

Re. Cardew and Barrett, the former's improvisatory contributions to AMM performances can be found on many of their earlier recordings (before he left AMM to engage more directly in his political activity). Shortly before his death in a hit and run traffic incident he was considering returning to work with AMM. Richard's recorded examples of improvisation feature in a wide range of groupings, from FURT to the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble. Improvisation often plays a major role in his compositions, too. Though I don't think it ever made it to CD, I used to have a recording on an Erato LP of Messiaen's improvisations to poems by his mother (L’Âme en bourgeon). My copy was a test-pressing. I am not sure whether it made it to commercial release. I'm sure Makropulos would know.
