During the centenary concert, Andris Nelsons made special mention of the performance of Britten's 'War Requiem' in Coventry Cathedral. If there were a 'Desert Island Discs' for DVDs, that would definitely be the one that I would keep - it's a priceless recording of an absolutely magnificent and deeply moving event that was simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting. The initial prolonged silence at the end speaks volumes.

News from the CBSO, a new chief conductor to take over after Mirga:

I don't know Kazuki Yamada's work well, from any BBC relays that I might have heard once upon a time. But based on the fact that he's principal guest conductor with the CBSO now, the choice makes complete sense. It's also a bit droll to read that the initial contract is defined as "a four and a half-year period" , starting 1 April 2023. But that takes the contract to 30 September 2027, which makes sense in terms of season start timings.

In any case, congrats to the CBSO. They certainly move faster for getting a new chief conductor than all the US orchestras now looking to fill music director posts (Chicago, Minnesota, Baltimore, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and other smaller regional groups that I'm missing).
