    CBSO Centenary

I thought that regular visitors here might be interested to see the first of the two seasons planned to celebrate the Centenary of the CBSO, just announced today:

We have tried to do justice to the history of the Orchestra, and of music in Birmingham, while also asking some questions about the future of classical music, of audiences and of orchestras over the next 100 years.

On a quick look, I'm likely to be making the journey to Birmingham several times next season. Congratulations on the Centenary season plans!

Beyond these dates I look forward to singing in Symphony Hall in October 2020 as part of a 400 strong Cornish Male Voice Choir.

The CBSO posted an announcement about the new book Forward by Richard Bratby in honor of the CBSO's 100th:

Yes, Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic cycles pale by comparison.

Ah, if it were only up to us...

But do read the book, it’s an excellent and fascinating read.

Well, perhaps not a CD release (or even a download for a fair price) of the 1995 cycle, but another airing on R3 may be warranted, since it would tick several boxes this year, including the obvious ones:

                    * Beethoven at 250
                    * The CBSO at 100
                    * Sir Simon Rattle at 65
                    * This particular cycle at 25

For Mr. Maddock, I think that those anniversaries offer sufficient justification to the powers that be, at least IMHO from this side of the pond, for another radio broadcast airing. Just sayin' :) .

Bit of a spoiler alert for CBSO audiences there, on their 2020-2021 season, as the CBSO and friends will have 2 dates @ Carnegie Hall next season, with these programs:

                      Friday, October 23, 2020:
                      City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Music Director and Conductor
                      Gidon Kremer, Violin

                      Ravel: La valse
                      Weinberg: Violin Concerto
Ades: Angel Symphony (NY Premiere, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall)
                      Debussy: La mer

                      Sat. October 24, 2020:
                      Elgar: Cello Concerto
Tippett: A Child of Our Time

                      City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra
Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, Music Director and Conductor
                      Talise Trevigne, Soprano
                      Felicity Palmer, Mezzo-Soprano
                      Joshua Stewart, Tenor
                      Matthew Brook, Bass-Baritone
                      Sheku Kanneh-Mason, Cello
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra Chorus
                      Simon Halsey, Chorus Director

Question for Stephen Maddock, if he sees this post: does this mark part of a longer US tour for the CBSO next season?

Indeed it does: quite a long tour actually. We’ve announced five concerts so far, with more to be announced in coming weeks.

In this Centenary year we have five international tours (34 concert) in total, including a residency in Vienna’s Musikverein, opening the Salzburg Festival (which is also 100 this year), and a pair of concerts in Lucerne as well as Carnegie Hall.

We also have four concert in London, which is quite unusual these days.

                        We will be kept busy!

                          CBSO Centenary 5 September

Shameless promotion here but I thought some forum members might be interested to know about this:

It’s 100 years to the hour since the Orchestra’s very first concert, and 40 years to the month since a 25-year old Simon Rattle first picked up the baton.

We’re really delighted to have Sir Simon with us, as well as Sheku Kanneh-Mason-Mason, sitar player Roopa Panesar and Birmingham-born actor Adrian Lester as presenter.

You can watch from the comfort of your own home.

Thank you for the announcement - free ticket much appreciated. Hope you all enjoy it too :-)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
