His first round performance at the Tchaikovsky competition will be this evening at five. Mind you, he has his hands full to replicate the ovation given last night to Mao Fujita from Japan.

Malofeev surprisingly fell at the first hurdle last night, despite the jury putting 14 of the 25 through to the second round instead of the scheduled 12. A justified decision though based on the performance. I don't think at 17 he need worry for his future.

Alexander has just posted his account of Prokofiev 3 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Nézet-Séguin on YouTube – a scintillatingly dynamic and exhilarating performance, every bit the equal of Martha Argerich. He has played all over the world to great acclaim – including recently with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Chailly – but never in the UK. His mother writes to me that he would love to play in London but has not received an invitation. I find that utterly incredible. Concert promoters here should wake up because he is already a pianist of prodigious talent and will assuredly attain world-class stature. I repeat that he would be an ideal booking for the 2020 BBC Proms!

That would be fantastic. I’m sure it was him I saw in the cafeteria before the Argerich/Barenboim Prom this summer.

Haunting performance of Tchaikovsky's Dumka in C minor by Alexander, age 17:

And an idiomatic and virtuosic account of Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F with Pletnev wielding the baton. Still only 18, Alexander has a prodigious memory and an astonishing range.

Still baffled as to why he has never been invited to play in this country.

Yes, a very striking performance of a personal favourite.

Coronavirus has stepped in to prevent Alexander's planned concert tour of northern Italy this month. Here is another recent performance by him, this time a superbly poetic account of Tchaikovsky's The Seasons:

Alexandеr Malofeev plays P.I.Tchaikovsky: The Seasons, Op.37a: January - At the Fireside: 00:07 February - Carnival: 04:32 March - Song of the Lark: 07:19 Ap...

New post: Alexander dashes off the Trepak from The Nutcracker:

Can you remember what he played in the competition? Astonishing he didn’t proceed but I say that having not heard his performance. He must be ‘beyond’ competitions now.

Sadly, I can't recall what he played at this distance. But whether it was nerves or whatever, there was not any particular controversy aroused by his omission from the second round. The surprise was engendered by his previous reputation and ( as far as conspiracy theorists are concerned ) his closeness to the Gergiev / Matsuev axis which is all powerful in Russian music it seems !

Very Interesting. Have you heard Alexandra Dovgan? Phenomenal player from what I’ve seen and heard on YouTube and Matsuev behind her too.
