His first round performance at the Tchaikovsky competition will be this evening at five. Mind you, he has his hands full to replicate the ovation given last night to Mao Fujita from Japan.

Alexander has just posted his account of Prokofiev 3 with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Nézet-Séguin on YouTube – a scintillatingly dynamic and exhilarating performance, every bit the equal of Martha Argerich. He has played all over the world to great acclaim – including recently with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under Chailly – but never in the UK. His mother writes to me that he would love to play in London but has not received an invitation. I find that utterly incredible. Concert promoters here should wake up because he is already a pianist of prodigious talent and will assuredly attain world-class stature. I repeat that he would be an ideal booking for the 2020 BBC Proms!

And an idiomatic and virtuosic account of Gershwin's Piano Concerto in F with Pletnev wielding the baton. Still only 18, Alexander has a prodigious memory and an astonishing range.
- George Gershwin. Piano Concerto in F major.Soloist Alexandеr Malofeev. Conductor Mikhail Pletnev.Russian National Orchestra.Moscow. Tchaikovsky Concert Hal...
Still baffled as to why he has never been invited to play in this country.

Coronavirus has stepped in to prevent Alexander's planned concert tour of northern Italy this month. Here is another recent performance by him, this time a superbly poetic account of Tchaikovsky's The Seasons:

Originally posted by zola View PostSadly, I can't recall what he played at this distance. But whether it was nerves or whatever, there was not any particular controversy aroused by his omission from the second round. The surprise was engendered by his previous reputation and ( as far as conspiracy theorists are concerned ) his closeness to the Gergiev / Matsuev axis which is all powerful in Russian music it seems !
