    Iestyn Davies sings Mahler

Lunchtime Concert on Monday 11 July
Iestyn Davies (countertenor) and Julius Drake (piano) perform Macrae, Poulenc and Faure.

Did anybody listen to this? Intriguing. Interesting but I must say I enjoyed the encore most: Music for a while.

STUART MACRAE: The Lif of this World
    POULENC: Le Bestiaire
    BLÁAR KINDSDOTTIR: Haiku
    FAURÉ: Clair de Lune
    JOSEPH PHIBBS: The Moon's Funeral
DOWLAND: In darkness let me dwell
    MAHLER: Um Mitternacht
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: Orpheus With His Lute; The Watermill
    FAURÉ: Prison
VAUGHAN WILLIAMS: The Sky Above the Roof
    BETTY ROE: To God
DUNHILL : The Cloths of Heaven
    RUBBRA : Psalm 150.

[ed] I thought the voice surprisingly suited the Mahler and Orpheus was very good (sounded rather like Purcell).

I too enjoyed it, thinking at one point that I was actually listening to a mezzo.
Great choice of songs and a very entertaining recital although the balance was a little piano-heavy in Um Mitternacht.

Oh BOTHER. I forgot. I'll listen on i-Player, but it's never the same.

Now that does sound like a programme! I'm not sure that I'll enjoy it all but it really is the sort of music that should be thrown into the daytime schedule to liven it up.

        (Julius Drake the accompanist, btw)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
