I find a lot of Mozart boring!!

This will ruffle a few feathers.
I find Sibelius boring (takes cover).I know it's great music and I feel as though I should like it but I don't.
A Sibelius mad friend of mind can't understand why on earth I would rather listen to a symphony by Lloyd, Parry or Stanford than one by JS.

That sounds like a good idea. Even Benjamin Britten suggested that the clarinet quintet was worth hearing.

I've seriously tried with Brahms
(and done a bar by bar analysis of the clarinet quintet )

Presumably MrGG's 'even' is in reference to the fact that Britten is known to have had a deep dislike for Brahms' oeuvre - he said something along the lines "I read through all of Brahms every couple of years, to make sure it's all as bad as I remember". Despite this he played one of the piano parts in a fine Aldeburgh performance of the Liebeslieder Waltzes that is available on CD.

I made the original post which Mr GG finds odd. Britten claimed to dislike Brahms, but is said to have played/studied all of the earlier composer's works, and then said that despite his general dislike, the clarinet quintet is a masterpiece - or something like that.

Surely this article is just designed to drum up press attention by just perpetuating the populist "classical music = boring" cliche? It's really rather unhelpful and the critics who participated should be a bit ashamed to be a part of it. People are just going to interpret it as "hey look, even people who listen to it for a living admit classical music is boring and therefore you're missing out on nothing!".

I'm surprised at some posters' readiness to dismiss music on first hearing. I have been guilty of that in the past but these days I do try to hear a piece several times before deciding on its merits/demerits. More often than not I'm pleased I persevered.

Perhaps it's not dull music, just dull performances....

I was fascinated to read more about some young lady called Jessica Duchen who apparently considers Bruckner 7 'tedious' ...

So I discovered this gem of a quote from her:

'Happiness, though, is taking in Brahms's Third Symphony three times in four days. If I had to name an all-time favourite symphony, it would be this one.'


Sorry, Jessie, I think I'd much rather be thoroughly miserable and listen to Bruckner's entire symphonic output (doctored revisions 'n' all) in 24 hours ...

Well, when I had obviously nothing better to do, I once listened to all the Bruckner Symphonies over two days at Xmas , not eschewing normal sleep and meals and little breaks, etc, but admittedly that did not include all the revisions ...

Sad, eh ... ?

Including all versions as well as 4 different finales for 9: with just 90 minutes left for meals, power naps and necessary little breaks, yes, it IS logistically possible.
After that I'm afraid the men with the white coats have to be called in.
