    Thibaut Garcia - Guitar

I have just caught the end of Thibaut's Wigmore Hall recital. His own arrangement of the Chaconne from Bach's solo violin partita in D minor was superb...and played superbly. Terrific clarity of texture and most sensitive phrasing. A new young star in the making?

I love this piece. I am familiar with Julian Bream's version but I'll have to check out this arrangement. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

I think Segovia made an arrangement too.

Most enjoyable recital. Here's the Bach Chaconne played on an 8 string guitar: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jcy7E4uHYK8

He did (I have the score ) and it was one of Rob Cowan's favourites in times of yore. I find his recording distinctly clunky and shuffly with characteristic Segovia phrasing - lots of rubato. But it was of its time and he was a pioneer of Bach on the guitar. I greatly prefer (when it comes to guitar versions) my two Julian Bream recordings from 1957 (Westminster, LP) and 1994 (EMI). But the Rafaella Smits version posted by Pianorak is simply wonderful.

I've listened to this whole recital twice (part of it is duet arrangements of Bach Inventions) and enjoyed it - very clean and expressive, the Chaconne leaning towards the Romantic end of the spectrum when it comes to phrasing I thought . The boring old Tansman is standard Segovia fare. I liked the duet versions of Bach Inventions in the middle best, and the Llobet encore El Testamen de Amelia (El Testament D'Amelia in Catalan) which every guitarist plays and which is translated on the website as Amelia's Will. The title of the original folk song is Princess Amelia's Last Will and Testament - the medieval tale of a queen who poisons her beautiful daughter out of jealousy.

I am very fond of the performance Pianorak provided a link to.

It is given by Raphaella Smits who was playing a Mirecourt guitar of c1827 (restored by, I think, Bernhard Kresse). From memory, the reading is slower than Garcia but it has a cumulative sweep to it and, to be honest, I much prefer it to Garcia's rather rhapsodic interpretation.

              - Pianorak also mentioned this tremendous performance back in July on the All of Bach Thread. It remains one of the best performances of the piece I've ever heard.

I had missed earlier mentions of this extraordinary young Franco-Spanish guitarist.

Impressed by the Gramophone review and despite feeling I did not really need another recording of the Concierto de Aranjuez I bought his record as it was only £9.99 on Amazon .

The famous concerto comes up as fresh as paint and the allegro truly is con spirito. It is terrific and up there with my favourites of Bream/Gardiner and Williams/Barenboim - indeed with the outstanding recording quality it has gone to the top of my tree.

Tansman’s neo-classical concerto Musique de Cour was new to me but it has soon got under my skin and the solo works by the dedicatee of the Rodrigo - Regino Sainz de la Masa and Louis XIV’s court guitarist de Visse are marvellously played .

Can’t recommend it highly enough .

I hadn't been aware of Tansman before, so I went looking:

I'm not sure that these pieces will tempt me to yet another Rodrigo recording, but for anyone who hasn't already got it, here it is:

I won’t repeat what I said . I cannot imagine anyone regretting shelling out a tenner on this record.

In Covid recuperation his Bach transcriptions CD has been played a lot - there is a magnificent urgent performance of the Chaconne , some lovely singing from Elsa Dreisig not just of the Ave Maria but also of the famous bb no 5 by Villa Lobos . He is an astonishing talent.
