    Dambuster words!

Has anyone ever put words to the Dambusters? The piece might take it.

The words here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dambusters_March don't seem, to me, to work at all!

The hymn setting appears in that awful Mission Praise, along with hundreds of embarrasingly bad hymns, most of them being modern and full of the worst cliches and banalities imagineable.

Billy Cotton's recording, which I've just listened to again for the first time in years and which still strikes me as embarrassingly contrived, incorporates voices and sound effects taken from - or aping - the soundtrack.

I have run boys' choirs, starting them off with "Proudly with high endeavour, We who are young forever... etc" It always works.

Haven't some football fans got hold of it yet?

Last thing we want is words to Dambusters. We will end up with Leslie Garrett singing them on Performance on 3 when we should really be getting Shoshtakovich war horse symphonies.

Thank you for the truly excellent suggestion. We also plan to ask listeners to 'Breakfast' to nominate their favourite Lancaster from 617 Squadron.

Here they are in full (only sung to the 'middle section' of the tune)

Proudly, with high endeavour, we, who are young forever,
won the freedom of the skies. We shall never die!

We who have made our story part of our country's glory
Know our hearts will still live on while Bri - tons - fly.
