Mahler 2 BSO Poole

I noticed thay the BSO are performing Mahler 2 in October. Its in the Lighthouse, Poole. Does anyone know the venue? Is it large enough for such a piece? Does it have an organ? Can't really tell from their website. Thanks.

It must be hard to believe that there are concert halls in the UK outside London!

Mahler's Symphony No 8 was performed there in 2015 and Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony the same year. So the answer is yes and yes!

Mahler 8 was pefrormed there in 2015, so space shouldn't be a problem.

It's a good hall. Occasionally the acoustic can be a tad harsh, ( in my limited experience) but it is a fine place to go to hear music.

Leave plenty of time if going by car , as the evening traffic through Bournemouth can be heavy.

I heard Messiaen's Turangalila Symphonie at The Dome in Brighton, many moons ago, when CBSO/Rattle when they recorded it for EMI. I didn't think that that venue was big enough! My friend thought so, but I beg to differ.

Are you sure? I don’t think it has a permanent pipe organ at all.
I’m reminded of Ferneys recent visit to Leeds TH to hear Saint-Saens 3 in which they used an electronic (maybe the LTH instrument is not at concert pitch/A440?.

These days a fixed pipe organ isn't essential. Many concert halls use electronic organs which are often excellent. I've seen Cameron Carpenter use one on the stage at Philharmonie Berlin and not the fixed pipe organ. Nothing to worry about!

So was I! (The Leeds Town Hall organ used to be used in concerts - I remember a performance of the Tchaikovsky Manfred Symphony with Hornspieler's old band in the very early '80s; the Finale started, as it does, with all guns blazing, and I was wondering how Pete would get to a climax if this was how it began. I was sat in the cheap seats behind the orchestra, close to the organ pipes - I found out!

The electric instrument was used in the Alpine Symphony last year, too. Seems such a waste when there's that rather spectacular instrument dominating the stage.)
