I see that this evening's relay comes from the University of Southampton's Turner Sims Concert Hall (where, many years ago, I used to see events for free when acting as an usher).
If memory serves, the acts I saw included Tubby Hayes and the Michael Garrick Quintet.

It's a shame Franz Liszt wasn't still around by the time R-K got around to composing Scheherazade, as I imagine he would have had a field day performing any arrangement he might have made of this work!

My source is the not-always-reliable Radio Times. I shall listen to Mr T on the iPlayer, having spent much of this evening watching the excellent 'Hamlet' broadcast on BBC 2 a few weeks ago.

I've just finished listening to this, and echo the admiration of previous messages. A wonderful combination of delicacy of touch and controlled power. Highly recommended. (Mark Forrest referred at one pint to 'the response of the crowd', which led me to wonder where there was an appreciative overflow audience at Villa Park.....)

Reminds me of a visiting jazz musician coming onstage and introducing himself by saying, "Erm, it really gives me a great pleasure to be here tonight, playing in... er... Bristol, is it? today?"

Haven't heard it. He gave a masterclass in B'ham on Tues and played this programme on Wed. Then played in So'ton on Fri.

Brilliant pianist and engages wonderfully with the audience. His Rachmaninov is amazing.
