Don't look at me - I did think of "fixing" yesterday, but quite enjoyed the good-natured banter from #3 onward (which now makes little sense) so left alone.

Dave - there's no record of a deleted post anywhere on the Thread, so it looks as if you hit the wrong button.

It would have been nice to attend that concert, but that would have been a hefty C-footprint to get there. The first half was Beethoven's 'Emperor' Concerto, to draw a crowd, needless to say. It's probably been discussed elsewhere, but it would be interesting if any Forumites have heard HB's newest Beethoven symphony cycle with the Gewandhaus.

Yes, Berglund recorded a complete Nielsen symphony cycle with the Royal Danish Orchestra.
Actually I had posed the question about Blomstedt and the LG for the new Beethoven set a few months ago and no one answered.
Your post implies the SFSO audiences didn’t react well to Stenhammar. I would have thought that that audience would be more open minded about unfamiliar Composers than we nabobs here in the Midwest, or does that only apply Minimalists?

The SFSO cycle lacked the accompanying works that the earlier Danish cycle had and that was the main reason that I repurchased that when it was released on CD here. I don't recall that the earlier
cycle had superior sonics but I'll have to listen when I go home. I also have the Naxos cycle and the Gilbert/NYP cycle which regrettably was recorded in the Sonic Graveyard of Concerts at Lincoln Center, a venue that makes the Barbican in London sound like the Concertgebouw in comparison. At any rate I prefer the two Blomstedts.
OT- did Paavo Berglund record any Nielsen? That would have been interesting
I have Blomstedt's SFSO cycle very good but that one on Bis is much better, imo.

Which, BBm? BIS has cycles with Vanska, Oramo, Chung, and Neeme Jarvii?

I have that box set that BiS has done, featuring the symphonies and concerti by Myun-whun Chung and Neeme Jarvi.

Prompted by positive comments from (I think) Petrushka, I bought the new LvB Gewandhaus set on CD last summer (in Scotland) and liked it so much that I bought another copy for France. Glorious playing from the orchestra, excellent recordings (from one of the acoustically finest concert halls anywhere) and, well, such joy in the music-making. As RFG seems to have experienced in Chicago, Blomstedt has rethought his approach to LvB (think Claudio Abbado). If I think, "Oh, I want to listen to a Beethoven symphony", for the sheer pleasure of the music, this set is usually where I will now turn.
