Sara Mohr-Pietsch introduces the fiftieth birthday concert - given half-a-century to the day after the ensembles very first appearance. Works by Birtwistle, Ligeti, and Stravinsky appear alongside new commissions from Hans Abrahamson, Deborah Pritchard (b1977), Samantha Fernando (b1984), and "Various". Various conductors, too - the original, David Atherton, is joined by George Benjamin, and Vladimir Jurowski.

London Sinfonietta 50th Anniversary Concert
Quite a considerable overrun tonight, so if you were not tuned in, the iPlayer will currently offer a truncated version, though the continuation, with an overlap, can be found in place of the start of "Free Thinking". Hopefully they will post a suitably re-edited version on the morn. For the present, those using some method or other to record from the iPlayer will find a suitable tacit to exploit in order to edit the thing neatly together. By the way, the concert started with a Birtwistle fanfare, without spoken introduction.

Another happy trip down memory lane as I recall a visit to Sadler's Wells Theatre, Rosebery Avenue. during the hot summer
of 1976 to see a platform performance of The Threepenny Opera, London Sinfonietta/Simon Rattle; the start of 'a beautiful
friendship' which continued later at the Drill Hall, opposite Euston Station. I was part of the West End theatre village at the time
and often got 'comps' for contemporary music at this location. A new learning curve with so many stimulating experiences.

The iPlayer file had now been sorted out and can be accessed here.
[Good to have an opportunity to hear the LS/Atherton recording of Gerhard's Libra in the interval, even if from a somewhat click-ridden LP. Why has this recording never made it to CD?]
