    CBSO/MGT/Vilde Frang 16.11.17

After tonight's concert one can see why MGT has wowed Birmingham. She is very much smaller than she appears in publicity photos but she is a ball of energy on the podium .

The concert opened with Messaien Un Sourire . This late work was new to me and I am not sure how smiley I found it . Very well played though .

The real attraction of this concert for me was to hear Vilde Frang in the Elgar Violin Concerto . I know she was due to play it in Italy with Jeffrey Tate but sadly he died the week before . I have not seen any concert brochures in which she played it before . No matter this was a stupendous performance completely idiomatic and I cannot recal ever hearing it better played her accompanied cadenza was dazzlingly beautiful and the slow movement a delight . She gave us such variation of tone throughout digging powerfully into the main theme of the first movement yet wonderful quiet playing too . The CBSO were in great form and although I was a bit worried by a big ritardando for the second theme in the first movement MGT seemed otherwise to give a highly sympathetic accompaniment . Warner should get Vilde Frang to follow up her Britten with this . It was a performance that had me feeling this is the most beautiful violin concerto of all .

The second half saw a very exciting and charming account of the Pastoral . In particular the Peasants really seemed to be having one hell of a party and a properly exciting Storm .

To finish an unexpected and gemutlich account of the Pizzicato Polia for an encore . A great concert and the CBSO appear to have hit bullseye again with this conductor .

Really. it's a wonder where these little people get their energy from.

For us blokes of course we can draw on reserves of strength derived from our Napoleon complex/SMS, but not sure how it works for women.

I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own.

I am not a number, I am a free man.

As a short person myself I regret that I am no longer a ball of energy.

Just before they go, I'm seeing Blechacz/CBSO/Mirga tonight at the excellent Warwick Arts Centre. La Mer replaces the Pastoral.

Nice audience comments for your concert on the CBSO's Twitter pages & a link to The Arts Desk review. Note the little clips of MGT inspiring/lecturing employees of HSBC, PwC, Pinsent Masons (law firm) on Weds! Magic!

I would love to hear Vilde Frang in the Elgar.

Am I right in thinking that she is somewhat taller than average thus emphasising the size of Mirga?

I heard her play the Brahms concerto some 5 years ago and she was exceptional. I too would love to hear her play the Elgar violin concerto.

Richard Bratby is very much in tune with Barbirollians' sentiments from his review at The Arts Desk:

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla has such a rapport with her Birmingham public that she can silence a capacity crowd - 2000-plus audience members, spilling over into Symphony Hall’s choir stalls – with the tiniest of gestures. Into that silence she neatly placed the first chord of Messiaen’s Un sourire, and you could hear every fibre of the string texture.

One interesting facet of the video with MG-T talking with the young business professionals is the subliminal point that MG-T is just about their age. That might make it easier for the PWC and Pinsent Masons folks to relate to her and to the possibility of going to Symphony Hall to try out a classical concert with the CBSO, especially if they've never been to Symphony Hall for the CBSO.

Just from reading these reports from this side of the pond, it really does look as though with MG-T, the CBSO struck gold for the 4th time in a row.

A raised rostrum and long baton?

Vilde is coming to London to play the Sibelius with the Philharmonya and Salonen on 7 December - not to be missed if you live close by I reckon .

I bought her Homages CD of encores - stupendous playing .
