That's three copies sold already! That must surely make it a bestseller among poetry books.

Many thanks, Micky - now that would be a CD (re)issue I would certainly acquire.

I have good news for you, fhg - the English music part of the set recorded by the AAM was reissued on CD under the title 'Music from the time of Elizabeth I', and copies can still seemingly be had for under £3 here:

Hogwood and the AAM do the more serious pieces, and they are joined for rather more bawdy fare by the excellent Sneak's Noyse.

I should also flag up the 3 CD set of the complete 'My Ladye Nevell's Booke' of keyboard music by Byrd, recorded by Hogwood on a selection of virginals and harpsichords back in the mid-70s. Well worth seeking out.

Many more thanks, Micky - I notice that the Music from the time of Elizabeth I CD is in the l'Oiseau Lyre "Mediaeval & Renaissance" box which I've had my eye on for some time. I might well go for the individual disc to tide me over until I can't resist not buying the box any longer. And, with luck, the Hogwood Lady Neville set will come down in price before too long - or I might just succumb to the MP3 download.

So many treasures - so few funds!

I know what you mean - with more time at home recently, I have been catching up with a lot of CDs that I missed when they first came out. Currently adding multiple Vivaldi operas - and burning a big hole in my budget!

Sneak's Noyse was the City Waites (Roddy, Lucie Skeaping et al.) operating under a different name for contractual reasons.

It seems to me that there is a resurgence of interest in this period of English music. Sounds alright to me!

I remember going to a couple of AAM New Year's Eve concerts at the Wigmore Hall in the early 80s and they were the guest artists - they brought the house down.

I went to this concert last night in Cambridge, and I cannot recommend it too highly. The beginning was extremely moving, the Dowland pavan followed immediately by 'In darkness let me dwell' sung by Carolyn Sampson seated next to the lute player, starting and ending with a wonderful pianissimo, and very expressive all through. If you listen tonight you will hear a wide range of other delights. But you will miss her extraordinary presence on stage, and the two fabulous gowns she wore!

He got it right at the 3rd attempt.
Coughing yes but did I really hear the sound of a nose being blown just after the start of Lovely Selina ?
                        Most enjoyable concert.

There seems to have been more discussion about this concert before it was broadcast than since! I wonder if my own feeling of disappointment were generally shared by Forumistas? (Most of it seemed a bit too "nice" for me, mostly a bit "safe" and "comfortable" - even Egarr's "improvisations" in the Handel I found twee and irritating. Some lovely sounds throughout - not least from Ms Sampson - but just not thrilling enough. Perhaps - as suggested in silvestrione's post - the oomph of the concert experience was lost over the airwaves?)

Still, some splendid discussions here before the event.
