Strauss: Don Quixote
Tchaikovsky: Symphony No 5
A really lovely exhibition of cello playing from Kian Soltani in the Strauss aided and abetted by Barenboim and the WEDO as well as the radio engineers in a beautifully balanced recording. I love Strauss' piece, full of pathos and humour, and this performance got that right.
Tchaikovsky to follow shortly. Wonder if Barenboim plays it as if it's in one continuous movement as he did several years ago when I heard him with the Chicago SO. It certainly worked well like that for me.
