OK, what I really want to know--do Forumites prefer Piano or Harpsichord?

Both! It's not either/or. But I have to say the piano brings a great deal to the Goldbergs. Happily the purist view that 'only the harpsichord would do' has seemingly died a death. Forumistas probably know my penchant for Angela Hewitt's first recording. I could (and do) listen to that twice over in one sitting. Not sure I could do that for a harpsichord version. However, I still love my old Helmut Walcha LPs, however unfashionable they may be to the modern harpsichordist.

Personally, I find the harpsichord very hard to listen to for long periods and therefore much prefer the pianoforte for Bach's wonderful Goldberg Variations.
