At first hearing I'm thinking the Harrison Birtwistle is a strong work. With a reasonable degree of concentration it seems reasonably accessible too! Not especially original it reminds me of the sound world of many new concertos/orchestral works written in the last 60 or so years.

Something odd happened to SSR's voice (just age, perhaps) - whenever I've caught him talking recently, it seems to have dropped a mile, like a 45 rpm played at 33....
I don't know when his accent changed to the one we hear now but he sounded very different as a young tyro. A bit like Nigel Kennedy, RP went out the window and Rattle embraced his inner Scouse.

        Good for him, I say.

I thought the orchestral playing in this was sensational and what an incredibly generous programme . Any one in the hall ?

I listened to this on the radio and thought it an adventurous programme that resulted in a superb concert, better than any of the Proms I'd listened to. Looking forward hearing the Berlioz and Stravinsky concerts on Sunday and Thursday respectively.

His voice has certainly dropped in tone. Natural or affectation I'm unsure! Maybe he had had a slurp or two!

Glancing through some of the notices today, I wish the reviewers could convey some more detailed appreciation of what they were hearing than just saying the LSO were on 'top form' or 'fabulous'. It tells me nothing and it is typical of the sort of lazy appraisal that top orchestras get.

British orchestra, conductor and music in London and it's not being seen in the UK??? Has Brexit gone this far already?
Mezzo has been relaying live LSO concerts from the Barbican to the rest of Europe for several years now, so the madness of the UK being able the only place in Europe where a relay of a British Orchestra playing a concert in London cannot be seen (even online) predates Brexit.

Some of the earlier Mezzo relays have recently been shown on Skyarts (Gergiev playing Berlioz, Brahms and Szymanowski), and Rattle's concert of Wagner and Haydn earlier this year was also shown on Skyarts, so this concert may appear in due course.

Edit: Indeed, I see that this Sunday Skyarts will be showing Rattle and the LSO performing Messiaen's Colours of the Celestial City and Bruckner's Symphony No 8 in a concert from the Barbican that the rest of Europe saw back in April 2016.

The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."

Ouch! You can always rely on Norman for a breath of foul air. I hadn't looked at his site for a while, but the comments were often more entertaining than the articles. I think someone called him an 'egregious louse' once.

Yes - but then he asked his mother not to post on his website any more.

Just listened on play again. Unfortunately the clock reached full time before E.D.U. Please don't tell me how it ended, I like a good mystery
