At first hearing I'm thinking the Harrison Birtwistle is a strong work. With a reasonable degree of concentration it seems reasonably accessible too! Not especially original it reminds me of the sound world of many new concertos/orchestral works written in the last 60 or so years.

Something odd happened to SSR's voice (just age, perhaps) - whenever I've caught him talking recently, it seems to have dropped a mile, like a 45 rpm played at 33....

British orchestra, conductor and music in London and it's not being seen in the UK??? Has Brexit gone this far already?
Some of the earlier Mezzo relays have recently been shown on Skyarts (Gergiev playing Berlioz, Brahms and Szymanowski), and Rattle's concert of Wagner and Haydn earlier this year was also shown on Skyarts, so this concert may appear in due course.
Edit: Indeed, I see that this Sunday Skyarts will be showing Rattle and the LSO performing Messiaen's Colours of the Celestial City and Bruckner's Symphony No 8 in a concert from the Barbican that the rest of Europe saw back in April 2016."I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square."
