Sir Simon Rattle's inaugural concert 14.09.17

    Rattle on Radio 3
    Radio 3 in Concert
    7.30 p.m.

Sir Simon Rattle conducts his inaugural concert as Music Director of the London Symphony Orchestra.
As part of the Barbican Centre's 'This is Rattle,' celebrations, Sir Simon Rattle begins his inaugural season as Music Director of the LSO and Artist-in-Association with the Barbican and Guildhall School of Music with works by Harrison Birtwistle, Oliver Knussen and Thomas Ades which have played an important part in his musical life. And those three modern masterworks are framed by the world premiere of a Fanfare by Helen Grime and Elgar's Enigma Variations, the work Rattle says, 'Opened the door to the twentieth century for British music.' Part of the ongoing series 'Rattle on Radio 3.'

    Live from Barbican Hall.

    Helen Grime: Fanfare (first performance)
    Thomas Adès: Asyla
    Harrison Birtwistle: Violin Concerto
    Oliver Knussen: Symphony No.3
Elgar: Variations on an Original Theme, 'Enigma.'.

    Christian Tetzlaff (violin)
    London Symphony Orchestra
    Sir Simon Rattle (conductor)

What a very excellent program (at least up to....well, you know : Rattle will of course have his very pertinent reasons...).
Scanning the LSO/Rattle Barbican program, it seems many of his concerts are at least as fascinating as this one. I only hope some more of them appear on Radio 3.
(A compelling prospect, this partnership, most truly).

Hope to hear as much of it as possible, in a very busy and demanding day, and week... has the Birtwistle been performed anywhere since the 2011 Proms?
Googling about I couldn't find much trace of it....
I recall many of us were very impressed by it, back then...

I had hoped to attend this one but with shortage of holiday time at work, I had to choose between this and next week's Stravinsky and plumped for the latter. As it turns out I have a busy evening ahead so may not be able to listen live. Recorder at the ready either way.

This will be the eleventh performance of the Birtwistle Concerto, and the fifth since its Prom appearance in 2011 (after five performances in March 2011 with the BostonSO, the BBCSO gave its UK premiere, then performances in Japan (Tokyo SO; 23/5/13), Austria (ViennaRSO; 12/8/13), Portugal (Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, Oporto; 11/3/17), and Croatia (CR&TVSO; 27/4/17) - all with Tetzlaff as soloist.

Or even Brighton & Hove, given that the music is Albion.

Apparently, this concert is being broadcast live on TV to mainland Europe, Canada and Asia by MezzoHD.

British orchestra, conductor and music in London and it's not being seen in the UK??? Has Brexit gone this far already?

That seems nuts! Does MezzoHD have its own subscription channel here?

Something odd happened to SSR's voice (just age, perhaps) - whenever I've caught him talking recently, it seems to have dropped a mile, like a 45 rpm played at 33....
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
                              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."
