        The voices of Monteverdi have a reality which reach directly across the years, whereas the voices of the classical era often seem contrived - all in my humble opinion of course.

          There's no arguing with that, Oddy - because you're comparing an individual composer with an entire "era". It would be as true - and as somehow "wrong" - to say "The voices of Mozart have a reality which reach directly across the years, whereas the voices of the Baroque era often seem contrived".

            Monteverdi is probably more of a son of a bachelor to sing than many later composers also!
