I was going with two other forumistas, then I realised I am double-booked. A friend’s 50th birthday celebration in a Chinese restaurant in Leyton. I can’t not go.

Many years ago I was faced with just such a clash. It was either a friend's wedding do or Solti and the Chicago SO at the Proms. Of course, I did the decent thing and went to the Prom

Tickets are well priced for this, and some decent ones still available.

Sorry you can't make it, Beefy.

I'd make an excuse, bilious attack maybe, then be sure to have separate meal with birthday friend.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and suggestions. I'm afraid there's no way I'd get away with not going - I will easily be found out. And it would be setting the wrong example to younger members of my circle as they approach their fiftieth birthdays! Having said that, the oldest is 71 and he is the worst of all of us!!!

              I'm still pretty gutted.

                Very sorry Beefy!

I'd go for L'Ascension, then dash over to Leyton just in time for the brandy. But there again, Turangalila is just not my bag...

The same programme is being given at Symphony Hall in Birmingham on May 26.

Can't provide a link on this phone but if you get on to it you could grab a ticket AND enjoy friend's birthday meal.

And in a far superior acoustic.

                          This Friday's a non-stater for me.

Although the tickets cost about twice as much (why?)

Maybe to keep people from Birmingham away?
