    Elgar, Piano Quintet, R3, 18 April '17

An unexpected treat to hear Elgar's Piano Quintet at 21.15 hrs, last night, unexpectedly scheduled after a broadcast of the R3 Evening concert. The surprise factor was to hear the Allegri Quartet/ John Ogdon, in a 1969 recording of the Quintet - such style and grace among many small pleasures as I recalled hearing this ensemble, formed in 1953 by Eli Goron and Wm Pleeth, in so many recitals during my London years.

Motivated to get a copy of Charles Beauclerk's biography of John Ogdon, Piano Man -
A Life of JG, (Simon & Schuster, 2014) off the shelves before a late night cuppa but was still engaged in its fascinating minutiae two hours later! The second surprise was to see a 1988 photograph with one of our regular contributors in the line-up at the QEH and narrative - just a hint!

The Elgar Quintet is a wonderful piece and I have that Ogdon recording on an EMI STUDIO cd. I've always loved the Medici Quartet's recording with the late John Bingham which is the cd I learnt the piece from. (Actually, iirc, I had the Lp then replaced it with the cd).

Many thanks. I should have looked it up but CDs are all put away and should have looked on Amazon!
