Oh, I thought the Nocturne just wonderful - he was so relaxed, the rubato! And the varied touch in the decorations...oh boy.

Interesting. I thought it was pretty grim by his exalted standards ..lumpy and with no flow.

Yes an absolute winner of a performance - especially the third movement!

Just listened to this on Sounds, and quite agree!

I was pleased to hear Boutique Fantasque in last evening's concert and reflected how rarely it seems to turn up in concerts as opposed to the many recordings there are.

I enjoyed listening, but did think it a slightly odd concert pairing with the Stabat Mater - although I suppose that isn't a particularly or overtly sacred composition, despite the text.

I'm unsure how much pure Rossini there is in Boutique. Like Dorati's Graduation Ball (not much heard in concerts either!) , it's a melange.

Ah, I didn't look far enough when looking for more about the Respighi.

Kirill Gerstein seems to be keeping Radio 3 on air at the moment with the concerts tonight , last night and this pm . The range , musicianship and virtuosity is worthy of the R3 equivalent of the Legion d’honneur . The amount of practice time he must have put in . Does he never sleep ?

In that, he is the polar opposite of Radio 3. I agree, in so far as his outstanding communicability as a pianist is concerned - his 'urtext' recording of the first Tchaikovsky concerto is one of those few recordings which has changed (if not my life) at least my total view of a supposedly familiar work.

When Pierre Boulez was asked how he managed to be so active in different fields, he replied 'I sleep fast'.

Kirill Gerstein certainly can't be accused of dumbing down. More strength to his elbow, says I.

An interesting mix of music across the centuries. Gives me hope for the future of R3.

It s better to travel hopefully than to arrive.
