Looks like some popular pieces on tonight, and live. May end up catching end of it as its my turn to put our son to bed.

Ryan Wigglesworth and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in Woolgar, Mozart and Elgar.

        Elgar and mozart looks good.

Try and listen to it later - well worth doing so (and entirely agree about the Mozart - and a live concert being a treat).

The BBC Symphony Orchestra with Semyon Bychkov in symphonies by Brahms and Detlev Glanert.

A rather underwhelming performance of the Rachmaninov Vespers by the small-sounding Latvian choir. Well sung but missing that
passion that Russian choirs bring to it, for example the USSR Chamber Choir under Polyansky.

I see that tonight's concert is one that the Guardian critic didn't seem to have entirely enjoyed
Armatrading’s first symphony, premiered by Chineke! conducted by Andrew Grams, was underdeveloped and dull. Neither composer nor ensemble come out well from this

Oh dear it looks like Smittims’ ( I think ) fears have been realised and my optimism was unfounded. Other than quasi song cycles e,g, Sgt Pepper or Quadrophenia and rock “operas “ like Tommy has their ever been a successful long form work written by a pop or rock musician? Let alone a symphonic work.

The reviewer mentioned Jonny Greenwood. He had work played on R3 and at the Proms. I'm not competent to express an opinion on how successful they were.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

                            Though perhaps more Carl Davis?

Hmmm …I think this is more evidence that long form doesn’t suit PM’s great talents . But why should he care? The most successful (co) composer in history in terms of sales? And one of the greatest of songwriters - up there with Gershwin and Rodgers .And very memorable - I can play more of his music from memory than just about any one else’s!

Well, the new Symphony No.1 from Joan Armatrading (yes, that one) IMHO got a more-or-less-justified bollocking from the Guardian. Of concern is the "No.1" bit. Chineke! Orchestra continues on its inadvertent mission to pick up the award for Largest Number of Premieres That Sunk Without Trace.
