Shostakovich's Eleventh Symphony may have been written at the request of the Soviet authorities, but it is now renowned as passionately empathetic to the oppressed citizens at the time of the Russian Revolution. Vasily Petrenko conducts it for the first time in Liverpool, and it is a great opportunity to hear the orchestra's incredible full-sized set of church bells: a powerful contrast to the romance of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, played by rising star Christian Li.

Hard to believe he hasn't previously conducted DSCH 11 in Liverpool, given that he recorded the Naxos cycle with them.

PS: Qualified by saying 'in concert'. Still surprised.

The TtN versions were credited to ESCAT. Sadly, I do not know which national broadcaster that refers to, and DuckDuckGo does not, either.

Ah, Google does know. It's the Spanish broadcaster.

That Mozart Fantasia and Sonata in C minor from Alicia de Larrocha was absolutely tremendous. And now Goyescas in which I guess she was peerless. Good piano sound as well.

No, I'm in the UK (Forest of Dean) - but listen to TTN when working.

I don't know if any of you are listening to In Concert just now? There was a world premiere from a composer who is unknown to me. Giger? Very unsettling and challenging to my ear, not something I would voluntarily listen to at all. But I'm glad I heard it. I adore Ibragimova, though, and the 5th violin concerto especially.

Yes, and I found it a bit too much of a challenge so turned the sound right down until the Mozart came on - and then fell asleep so missed what I actually wanted to hear! In my defence I was severely sleep deprived even by my standards, but it was annoying as this was an evening concert I had actually wanted to hear, many of the ones in recent months not being particularly appealing to me.
The fortepiano in the piano concerto in the first half gave a very different reading of the music, with the bass register very full and prominent to my ears in contrast to the upper so it almost sounded like two different instruments.

That Goyecas is still reverberating. I can’t believe the colours she got out of the piano . The sheer mastery of it all - the phrasing , dynamics , the shading, tone control , the pedalling - absolutely extraordinary.

I totally missed this one when it was live and I'm too late for tuning in to today's. Given the rave reviews I'm going to catch up on this one first and then listen to the other while I work, tomorrow. I adore her, too
