Good grief what a disappointing music programme this year. Opera stronger but nothing remotely modern (other than Greek.) I think the Dance programme also lacking shine. As usual the theatre will provide most interest especially if you like the work of Zinnie Harris. Contemporary music by PJ Harvey and Jarvis Cocker!!!! And the Incredible String Band??? We are truly losing our way up here, all to connect to a younger audience, celebrate diversity, reach out to others...

While most of the classical programming at the Usher Hall is indeed standard (par for the course, given classical programming in general), there is some buried treasure, like:
* 11 August: Elgar - Songs from the Saga of King Olaf
* The 3 Monteverdi operas led by JEG
* 26 August: DSCH 12 (a rare chance to hear it live, admittedly for good reason, but if you want to hear it live, go for it)
Plus, the Queen's Hall concerts give me material for starting to populate the Forum calendar later this spring, for R3 relay. The chamber concerts do focus on core composers, to be sure, but at a glance, those programs look all of quality.
For one, I wouldn't mind catching PJ Harvey at the Edinburgh Playhouse during the Festival, if I had the fortune to be there during that time.
