Scanning the past week's schedules for any missed gems, I came across this.
I'm not an unadulterated admirer of this work, but this spectacularly engineered performance has to be worth an hour of anyone's time, the BSO providing further evidence of their growing international reputation. Notable contributions from the solo cor anglais, piccolo, clarinet in the final movement and trumpet. Karabits certainly nailed the structure of the work, with the only criticism being that the overall performance erred on the cool side, possibly missing the final ounce of catharsis in the finale, or jackbooted menace in the second movement. The recording, however, is a real pleasure, conveying a real sense of the Lighthouse acoustic, every solo clearly heard above the orchestra without being unduly spotlight.
