    A trail-less, chat-less day

I wonder if R3 could give us just once in a while a totally trail-less, totally chat between music-less day, in which we just heard music with monimum input from pushy, self-promoting 'presenters'?

John Shea, Jonathan Swain, Martin Handley, Catherine Bott, plus guest for the day, Patricia Hughes.

Aaaah. I'd wake up at 6.30 a.m. to be ready for that!!

I like the idea, though I do consider that, historically, Patricia Hughes was the first of the gushers (BBC Young Musician, etc.).

I'm not convinced that the presenters are "self-promoting" - they merely carry out their job description. I'd be very surprised if Rob Cowan really feels comfortable with all those nausiating, patronising requests for text messages.

I much preferred the way announcements were made on The Third in the 1950s/60s.

"And now, Dudley Moore performs a setting by Benjamin Britten of the old English folk song 'Little Miss Muffett'. The Miss Muffett referred to in the text is believed to have been the daughter of Sir Thomas Muffett, an 18th century entomologist"

I hope Patricia Hughes is not the litigious type who would sue for this slander. A case of getting your Patricias confused with your Stephanies.

He manages to sound remarkably comfortable with them and very satisfied with announcing "And I'm Rob Cowan". It really is as close to announcing that "this is the Rob Cowan Show" as I could imagine.

Joy Worth was the best, famous for the occasion when announcing a lunchtime concert. After giving a level test, and unaware that she was already on air, the startled audience heard --" Have you had enough darling, or would you like a little more ?"
                A great lady, marvellous voice.

I was listening on R3 to a post-concert piano work (Tchaikovsky or Chopin?) while in the kitchen washing up the supper dishes when a voice behind me said enquiringly, 'Cup of tea?'. As I was the only person in the house it gave me a considerable shock, but turned out to be a certain announcer who'd left his microphone open.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.
