Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time

A really excellent lunchtime performance of this work at Huddersfield Uni from music staff - the wonderful Philip Thomas and colleagues (David Milsom, George Kennaway and Emily Worthington) - very moving and nice to bump into Richard Steinitz, who let on he's got a new book on the go as a follow-up to 'Explosions in November', this time a collection of discussion, round robins. after-concert talks etc. from the Festival, all of which he's painstakingly transcribing..

Ah! I heard about this concert, and was very sorry not to have been able to attend - especially after hearing comments from another source on how good it was. RS is still seen at many HCMF events; frailer than he used to be, but as sharp an intellect as ever. Glad to see that another book is on the way - the last I heard, he had been considering a study of Lachenmann. I think it would be marvellous if there was a work as fine as his book on Ligeti. (Currently being borrowed by the "other source"!)

I'd certainly have attended this, had I been in the area and available, but I didn't know it was on. One of my favourite chamber pieces.

They are not widely advertised unfortunately - the website lists details well in advance (some good stuff coming up) but that's really the only way to get to know...

Don't hear much about Messiaen's music these days, so I hope he has not become one of the neglected ones?
