Rather surprised to see no comments. Do those of us on the Radio 3 Forum not listen to the station? Had this been a Prom we would no doubt have been on our fifth page by now. Mind, judging from the remarkable admissions in the 'What Music Doesn't Move You' thread perhaps I shouldn't be that astonished.

Can I put in a plea for everyone to listen to the Turnage work? It isn't very often that the concert starter eclipses the Mahler main course but here I think it did. The abiding memory I will take from this concert will be the very moving Remembering: In Memoriam Evan Scofield. It is a half hour symphony in all but name and as such marks a substantial milestone in Turnage's work. I'd say it is the best thing he has done. The Turnage trademarks are still there but utilised to a greater end. I think this will be a work that will stay in the repertoire.

All that is not to say that the Mahler was in any way a disappointment; it certainly wasn't. Judge for yourselves by listening again - or in this case it would seem - listen for the first time!

Wow Pet. That's a pretty big claim. I'll certainly give it a whirl. Thanks also everyone for the links to this concert. I've been absent from this board for quite some time and not listened to R3 much of late either. I will have to make amends.

Pet - a rare note of discord between us - I wouldn't equate not listening to this concert with not listening to the station, and would hesitate to censure, by implication, those of our fellow forumites who chose not to share in this particular experience. Many an outstanding lunchtime Wigmore goes by without significant comment on the Forum, from which I would not necessarily deduce that nobody is listening, likewise EMS - you yourself have "admitted" () to not caring for chamber music or lieder, which I consider equally heinous . I rarely listen to orchestral concerts at home on R3 in the evening - I was unlikely to have tuned in for this one, rightly or wrongly not fancying the Turnage (my loss I'm sure, but there we are). And the trouble with broadcast concerts, if you don't fancy the first half it's tricky to time your tuning in to coincide with the end of the interval .

I was surprised by some of the "admissions" on that thread, but on the other hand am used to being in a minority so hesitate to cast aspersions.....

All points duly taken, Richard, To be honest, though, I'm still surprised at the lack of comment when you consider that this was Mahler and Rattle in a stand out concert that delivered what it promised. I've got over it now.

One thing, though. It isn't that I don't like chamber music (Lieder may be a different matter) but that my over-riding interest is in orchestral music and, working full-time, a woeful lack of hours in the day so chamber music has been on the back burner for much too long. It'll come one day. Retirement beckons in two years time so hopefully it will come then.

Thanks for the tip off about the quality of this Petrushka . I missed the live relay as I went to a BSO concert at Exeter that night . Caught up with it last night as a welcome alternative to the Glass concert . Thought the Mahler took a bit of time to get into its stride with some oddly slow tempi in the first movement . The final movement was sensational - one of the best things I have heard Rattle do. That final chord must have been ear splitting in the hall - relatively uncompressed on iplayer it nearly took my speakers out. I will catch up with the Turnage when another Glass -like opportunity presents . Just a thought but you might have got more response to the thread if you'd suggested Rattle place the Andante third rather than second . Just kidding ....

Listened to the Turnage last night. Wasn’t as taken as Pertrushka with it, but I’ll return and see what happens.
