Cali: who is the Italian surnamed soprano whom you believe deserves incarceration? Just curious! A PM will do the trick of satisfying said curiosity, if you'd be so kind...
    Are you being ironic?

In which particular bit of my post? Anyway, not that I'd noticed, since you ask (and I cannot speak for Cali, of course)...

A case of the ironic being misled by the un-ironic if ever there was one!

Isn't the important point that you are assuming that because people 'aren't interested in opera' they won't be interested if they're given the opportunity to listen to it? Or are you saying that they've mostly tried it/been forced to listen to it already and they *aren't interested*?

There are many anecdotal stories that when classical music is presented in the right sort of context (i.e. not outside supermarkets to disperse yobbos) it is appreciated by those who would have said they 'didn't like it'.

(Great thread title, by the way!)
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Didn't a few years back the ROH provide opera tickets at low prices to Sun readers . Who apparently loved Carmen and gasped and became involved like an opera audience of old ? No doubt many would have thought they would not be interested in it .

Prejudging people due to the fact that they are in prison seems rather narrow minded to me . Look at the success of Timpson's work programme for a start .

... Jeffrey Archer, Jonathan Aitken, Asil Nadir, Denis McShane, Andy Coulson - do we really want our taxes to give them free access to Covent Garden quality chanteuses?

I regret that post! What I was trying to do was make a pun around prisoners not having the right to vote and using feet that wouldn’t be allowed. I carelessly opened with some inductive reasoning, when I should have known that absolute certainty would be demanded!

I would imagine that within the context of some kind of options appraisal, they’ll love the event. So, I believe two seemingly contradictory things - the inmates don’t like opera and they will love this event.

IMV, not quite as narrow-minded as judging people again a second time, when they have served their sentence and are rejoining society and getting back to their livelihood - unless you think natural justice means that sex-offenders don’t count. But then I didn’t prejudge anyone.

That puts another light on it entirely .

Oh, not all of it, surely? That would be such a shame! (and, for the record, no, I'm not being ironic)...
