    Unsound Frontiers

If I hear another announcement - and they happen seemingly at 10 minute intervals throughout every R3 programme - about briefcasing [Archers slang] pop-up studios, residencies, live here at South Bank Centre, And there are lots of cheering, screaming R3 fans outside my glass box' smugnesses I shall scream.

Many, maybe most, regular in-studio programmes do not lend themselves to OB style delivery, and once landed on Planet Sound Frontiers against non-stop bustle and chatter behind the presenters has turned them into a very unsatisfactory listening experience. And the presenters will not stop patting themselves on the back at their bravery, their innovation, and all the 'isn't it excitingly daring' stuff!

For me, this whole South Bank 'residency' has been an unmitigated PR disaster. The terrible shame is that some of the programmes to recall the Third Programme's birth and delivery have been fascinating and eminently worth doing, but the ongoing, inward looking, self-congratulation simply embarrassing.

I thought R3 had more self-respect and dignity than this.

I suspect it is age related - us oldies are no longer required within the audience mix - I find the constant repetition of adverts (+ other obvious program placements) within programs to be a turn off, which I did repeatedly until getting fed up I ditched R3 except for very few specific programs - tried for the first time for a long time the Sunday morning program yesterday, lasted a single piece before the atmosphere was ruining by an unrelated and totally jarring advert.

      I shall scream...
I think you just did, albeit somewhat demurely!

I'm not sure that it's been a PR disaster. Surely just an unsuitable format for live broadcasting? - especially as I don't think 'the listeners at home' are the major targets anyway. Whether it's been a 'PR disaster' will depend on how successful it's been at widening awareness of Radio 3 and what it does among an audience which has never spared it a moment's thought in the past.
It isn't given us to know those rare moments when people are wide open and the lightest touch can wither or heal. A moment too late and we can never reach them any more in this world.

Agreed - angry despair fuelled my posting.
