    Lennox Berkeley : Stabat Mater/Radio 3 14th June 2016

    Interesting looking concert tomorrow evening.
I have some LB choral music but I don't know the Stabat Mater so I'm really looking forward to this..
Unusual scoring,6 soloists and chamber group.
    Anyone familiar with it ?

I really, really enjoyed this concert and especially LB's Stabat Mater (about 52 mins from the start). What a lovely piece!!! And the voices of the Marian Consort were so fresh and straight, and so ably accompanied by the Berkeley Ensemble that the whole thing was transparent and clear. I wonder why this piece is not better-known? It was the first time I've (knowingly) heard it.

    Here's the whole programme:

    Judith Weir: Ave Regina Caelorum
    Matthew Martin: Ave Virgo Sanctissima
Michael Berkeley: Catch Me If You Can
    Hilary Campbell: Ave Maria

    8.00pm Interval

    Michael Berkeley: Touch Light
    Lennox Berkeley: Stabat Mater

    The Marian Consort
    The Berkeley Ensemble
    David Wordsworth (conductor).

Yes I agree,a wonderful concert and the Berkeley Stabat Mater was certainly the highlight.
I am not a musician or singer but would think this by no means an easy piece to perform so well, the instrumental parts especially virtuosic at times.
The same forces have recorded it at Snape Maltings for future release.
If you listen on I player keep with it for the Clarke,RVW and Bridge afters.

I'm afraid a number of the private tape recordings of BBC concerts recently issued on Lyrita have not been to my taste mainly owing to the sound quality.

Sometimes the music shines through Stan.

I've not heard them all but I've heard a few and sound quality puts me off. But that's just me, I suppose. I've always tended to prefer the modern digital recordings. I could never really enjoy Radio Luxembourg in the 1960s owing to the sound quality.
