I don't regularly get the BBCMM but I'm glad I got that one, knockout stuff by the orchestra and Sir Charlie!
Apparently at ENO Mackerras was known as 'Chuck 'em up' Charlie on account of his vigorous physical cues to singers - I think Janet Baker has told this story. I recall being amazed the first time I saw him doing it - he looked like he was directing a landing Jumbo at Heathrow

What a star he was - and much missed you are Charlie!

I've not listened to it for a while, but it's not a perfromance I warmed to. I'm on the look-out for an alternative.

Much in evidence in Mahler 6 no doubt...

        Agreed!

He used the score just in 'Das Lied' - supporting the comment somewhere here about him having fought shy of the piece, and being relatively unfamiliar with it. But it must be a sign of age too - he always conducted without, even for pieces he was new to, I remember him saying...

No, the Adagio from No 10 just flowed out of him as if he was creating it there and then
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
        Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

              Mahler 9 links

On the big day, listened to:

              a. Das Lied von der Erde, the DG recording with Brigitte Fassbaender and Francisco Araiza, and the Berlin Phil with Carlo Maria Giulini
              b. Symphony No. 9, with Haitink and the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Kerstmatinee from 1987

Oh, and speaking of the latter, for those interested:

which is a download of the 2004 live Daniel Harding/VPO Mahler/Cooke Symphony No 10. Downloaded from the same source as the Haitink/LSO No 9 - excellent sound, complete with audience noise (unlike the CD). A performance I really love - it was my 18 May listening on a Nice/London flight. Everyone else seems to like Sir Simon but I just can't get over the beauty of the VPO's playing.

You would say that, wouldn't you?

I've got his recording of the 7th (on the BBC Masters issue) so perhaps I should go for the 6th as well.

will Mahler 8 on BBC 4 tonight be worth revisiting, in anyone's opinion?

Yes, most certainly. A thrilling performance.

I was there that night and was rather underwhelmed but enjoyed the TV relay much more. Still thought the soloists a mixed bunch but the sound coming through my speakers knocked spots off the live event in the hall. Perhaps I had a duff seat.

Fantastic stuff, BSP! I was present at this and have downloaded it to replace my inadequate recording. Grateful thanks! Anyone interested would be advised to get on to these quickly as some offerings tend to get swiftly removed by youtube. There's also a terrific Mahler 6 from Haitink and the EUYO at a 2003 Prom which I also attended.

That is an amazing condemnation of the dear old RAH !!! Especially with a piece like Mahler 8! But I know what you mean. Great to go now and then but increasingly, one realises that the old place is sonically a nightmare. Still, Mahler 8 is a piece I would have banked on to work in that space, better than any domestic set up. Maybe you have some mind-bloewing speakers??
