I understand Kazushi Ono is replacing Sakari Oramo with the CBSO in Brum tonight.

I thought he was excellent conducting Tannhauser at the Monnaie some years ago.

Unlike the BBC, German TV are broadcasting a concert live from the Philharmonie in Berlin, with Abbado doing the first movement of the Tenth and Das Lied von der Erde with Anne Sofie von Otter and Jonas Kaufmann. I shall be watching it free-to-air via Astra satellite on the Arte Channel.

Also available online at a cost

Classical concert online: Gustav Mahler's Lied von der Erde performed by the Berliner Philharmoniker and Claudio Abbado.

Thank goodness for Classic FM eh. Mahler 2 tonight at 8pm!

Incredible! To be fair, R3 had two bites of popular Mahler in 'Breakfast' and aired the 4th Symphony on Monday evening.

Perhaps Mahler has become so popular that Classic FM are 'expected' to cover the anniversary; and not just with the Resurrection Andante!

They had the whole of mahler 3 last night - but it was the Nagano performance and I got rather bored and went for a walk after the first movement.

The CD that Classic FM chose for Mahler 3 played mvt 2 without a break from the huge 36 minute mvt 1.
And, obviously, it wasn't the same at the end without the applause!

Of course, Radio 3 did do Discovering Music on Mahler 2 (Ive still got to get my thoughts down and write something about it!)

But I was expecting the all singing all dancing no.9 tonight on Radio 3 for some reason!

So here's my absurd story (and confession) of Mahlerliebe... I learned the symphonies in order from the old Chicago/Solti box set, and was having a great time of it. But about ten years ago, I got to the Sixth, and the experience was so enthralling and shattering that I decided not to listen any further. My reason: I couldn't bear the thought of living in a world where there wasn't NEW Mahler to discover. As a result, I've never heard a note of the Seventh, Ninth, Tenth, or Das Lied. (The Eighth used to be in that list, but I finally broke the seal on that one a couple years ago.) Every year or so I get tempted to listen to a new one, but usually I hold off.

I'm going to be sorely tempted to pop open the Ninth this summer with the Stuttgart Radio/Norrington concert at the Proms.

Did so want to catch the BPO/Abbado Das Lied but I've had a lot of technical problems with the Digital Concert Hall and wasn't going to risk it.

Instead I unwrapped Abbado's Mahler 9, a truly wonderful performance.

I went for Barbirolli's stuttgart Resurrection in the end - lots of mistakes in this live performance apparently but to me it gets to the heart of the music and indeed of Mahler like no other .

I signed up for the BPO digital relay... My internet link even supports the HD 720p quality relay, and it looked and sounded wonderful... But the electrician in the house to overhaul the electrics was here late: I finally shut the door on him just as the final applause started

I was able to hear bits but not immerse myself

Didn't hear any of Kaufman and only some of the Abschied - ASvO is I regret to say showing her age vocally, but everyone seemed very bound up in it, and she was in tears at the end. The applause went on long after the orchestra had left the stage - conductor and soloists came back on to an empty stage for a final call. I shall listen to it in their archive next time I have a day when I can take advantage of a 9€ day pass (today's having been rather wasted )

PS It's the only time I've ever seen Claudio A conducting from a score, ever....

                      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

What a fantastic post - so much joy and emotion experienced, so much more to come.

I followed your journey, but then leapt to the 10th (the 1965 Ormandy); going from the finale of the 6th to the finale of the 10th......... well, I won't ruin your journey by giving anything away!

I started by watching Abbado's Lucerne Resurrection and at the end listened again to the finale but with Barbirolli, the BPO , Maria Stader and Janet Baker.

Thanks! I'll get there someday! :)

As 18.5 winds down, I'm celebrating by listening to my current favorite Sixth: BBCPO/Mackerras, released with the BBC Music Magazine a few years ago, with the switched around middle movements (adagio second, scherzo third), and the restored third hammer blow.

                              That's a cracking performance, isn't it?

I don't regularly get the BBCMM but I'm glad I got that one, knockout stuff by the orchestra and Sir Charlie!

Very sorry to hear of your trials & tribs Caliban - best laid plans, eh?!

Re Claudio's use of a score - was this for both works or just for the Adagio of symphony no 10?
