    Gustav Mahler May 18 2011

This is a special day for all lovers of Mahler's music. How will you be marking the occasion? A memorable CD perhaps? If so which one?

I will be unwrapping Abbado's DVD of the 9th Symphony saved specfically for the occasion.

Your thread almost made me crack and get a ticket for the Berlin / Abbado "Das Lied" tomorrow...

EDIT: thanks to the thread about tomorrow's concert, I shall be booking my ticket for the Digital Concert Hall instead, to mark this centenary

      Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

The same pieces as on 18 May 1986: Adagio 10 followed by Schönberg's piano pieces opus 19

I've somehow contrived not to attend a single Mahler symphony in the glut of last year and this. Some songs, yes, most notably Joan Rodgers and Roger Vignoles in Des Knaben Wunderhorn at the Barber Institute in Birmingham and the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen from Sarah Connolly with OAE/Jurowski.

And I've listened to lots of ancient recordings from Mahler's Hofoper company in Vienna (his day job), some still famous, others neglected: Hermann Winkelmann, Lilli Lehmann, Ernst Kraus, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Anna von Mildenburg, Laura Hilgermann, Lucie Weidt, Erik Schmedes, Leo Slezak, Leopold Demuth, Wilhelm Hesch and others.

They teach us so much about performing practice as taught/sought by Mahler. Wish more singers would listen to them!

Are you going to indulge too?

I would have thought it well worth taking a 24h ticket for tomorrow, to mark the centenary and also have a wander round the other excellent concerts on offer in their archive

The Vienna Philharmonic are performing Mahler 9 in the State Opera under Danielle Gatti on May 18 but somewhat surprisingly the Austrian Radio is instead broadcasting Lorin Maazel's commercial recording with the orchestra.

Will be playing Symphony No. 8 later on, and possibly No. 9 as well, depending on how I am.

Grand venue to hear it in, ostuni - who's 'doing' it?

                        Hope it's a great evening

Some suggestions here for globe-trotters.... and a "Mahler cycle" survey

Well, its such a special day that Radio 3 have decided not to play any Mahler whatsoever on Performance on 3! He's not even composer of the week!
Thank goodness for Classic FM eh. Mahler 2 tonight at 8pm!
