I will be unwrapping Abbado's DVD of the 9th Symphony saved specfically for the occasion.

I've somehow contrived not to attend a single Mahler symphony in the glut of last year and this. Some songs, yes, most notably Joan Rodgers and Roger Vignoles in Des Knaben Wunderhorn at the Barber Institute in Birmingham and the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen from Sarah Connolly with OAE/Jurowski.

And I've listened to lots of ancient recordings from Mahler's Hofoper company in Vienna (his day job), some still famous, others neglected: Hermann Winkelmann, Lilli Lehmann, Ernst Kraus, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Anna von Mildenburg, Laura Hilgermann, Lucie Weidt, Erik Schmedes, Leo Slezak, Leopold Demuth, Wilhelm Hesch and others.

They teach us so much about performing practice as taught/sought by Mahler. Wish more singers would listen to them!

The Vienna Philharmonic are performing Mahler 9 in the State Opera under Danielle Gatti on May 18 but somewhat surprisingly the Austrian Radio is instead broadcasting Lorin Maazel's commercial recording with the orchestra.

Well, its such a special day that Radio 3 have decided not to play any Mahler whatsoever on Performance on 3! He's not even composer of the week!
Thank goodness for Classic FM eh. Mahler 2 tonight at 8pm!
