    Mahler 2 BBCPO/Sinaisky R3 May 18

I know that this has been mentioned elsewhere on the Forum but if anyone missed this can I advise a quick dash to the I-player?

There were no interpretative quirks here, just a great symphony given a great performance by an orchestra in absolutely top form. I don't think I've heard Sinaisky in Mahler before but had I known what we were in for I would have made the effort to attend this concert.

Please, please, this has to be issued as a BBC Music Mag CD!! It should just about fit on to a single disc and would make a fine addition to my Mahler 2 collection.

In my opinion, Vassily Sinaisky was the best Principal Conductor the BBCPO never had (but should have been) - he shone as their Principal Guest conductor. He conducted some fabulous concerts - Bruckner 8; Elgar 1; Shostakovich 4 have stayed long in the memory. He conducted Mahler 3 during the 'Mahler in Manchester' series. Unfortunately. I was out of the country last weekend and couldn't get to the concert.

I found this completely convincing too, having heard a portion on the car radio and feeling compelled to take a chunk out of yesterday evening to listen to it all. A cd would be very welcome! ... the ebb and flow of momentum, the sheer sense of connection .. I'll be paying attention when Sinaisky and Mahler's names next appear together.

Would I be right in thinking that the Resurrection is unrepresented on the BBCMM label?

You would indeed be right! The longest CD in the BBC MM series is, I think, the Verdi Requiem disc with Sir John Pritchard which clocks in at around the 84 minute mark (disc not to hand as I type) and this Mahler 2 should fit on to one disc. If Mahler 2 needs representation as a BBC MM disc then I can hardly think of a better candidate than this Sinaisky performance.

I caught the last few minutes of this when first broadcast and thought to myself 'Mmmmm.....this one is definitely worth a listen' and I agree 100% with Petrushka. A very, very good performance. One for the library.
