    Live in Concert 28.04.16 CBSO/Volkov

    Live from Symphony Hall, Birmingham.

    Ilan Volkov - Conductor
    Alexandre Tharaud - Piano
    Sarah Tynan - Soprano

    Debussy (orch. Abrahamsen): Children's Corner
Hans Abrahamsen: Concerto for the Left Hand (CBSO co-commission, UK premiere)

    Mahler: Symphony No. 4

Gustav Mahler never wrote anything happier than his Fourth Symphony. Jangling sleighbells, Mozart-like melodies, and a child's vision of heaven... if it almost sounds too sweet, trust Ilan Volkov to find the black comedy beneath the playful surface. First, though, we've a charming new version of Debussy's Children's Corner - and the first UK performance of a new piano concerto, specially written for tonight's soloist by the Danish sonic magician Hans Abrahamsen.

Sorry to post this thread after the concert took place, but did anyone hear Mahler's Horn Concerto in this concert yesterday evening?

Actually, it was Mahler's 4th Symphony with a totally bizarre sound balance, emphasising the 1st horn at the expense of everything else. I wonder whether it was the same engineer who was responsible for the balance in the Bridgewater Hall a few days earlier.

I haven't seen Hornspieler posting much recently. Perhaps he's been up to some sabotage?

some Abrahamsen at the Proms this year IIRC.

The first SQ is a work I need to revisit.

Well I very much enjoyed his reduction of Nielsen's 6th but am only now catching up with last night's CBSO/Volkov concert. The orchestration of the Debussy does sound rather more interesting that that by Caplet. Still to hear the concerto.
