Bach Mass in B Minor 08/04/2016

I am enjoying this performance by Bach Collegium Musicum, very much in line with what I expected from their recordings of JSB cantatas. However, I was somewhat taken aback to hear applause after the Gloria. I joined the broadcast about 10 minutes late due to an incoming phone call so missed the preliminary announcements. I did not expect an interval, despite the length of the piece - is this normal practice when this mass setting is performed? Whether Bach expected his mass to be performed liturgically is something we will probably never know, but I do think of it as a liturgical work and would have expected it to be performed without an interval and certainly would have expected applause to be discouraged.

...but we can make a fair guess!

Anyway, I look forward to catching up on i-player. Thanks for the reminder.

I enjoyed it very much. I don't think it's usually performed without an interval - it's very long as masses go, and if you get an interval, you always get applause. Just be thankful it was only at the interval (and the end, obviously).

I'll be playing catch up. I was at the RAH, London, last night, seeing something completely different

This was fantastic. I heard the live broadcast and then had to listen again the following day. Suzuki and his performers are at the top of their game, totally at the service of the composer. Suzuki loves every note of this piece as he said in the interval and it shows. Only the tenor Colin Balzer was disappointing; he seemed to tire near the end. A pity the BCJ's usual tenor, Makoto Sakurada, was unavailable. He can be seen on a You Tube performance from last year in Tokio with almost the same performers as last Friday. Superb!
