A strange concert at Sheffield City Hall - a small ensemble from the OAE plus 4 singers who sang one to a part in the Thurd and Fourth of Bach's Lutheran Masses .
The hall was by no means full but was not empty and the audience plainly enjoyed the very fine performances of a curious programme . After a Sinfonia - Bach's Third Lutheran Mass followed - rather a worthy work by the sounds of it and an odd one to choose as the soprano solo Mary Bevan struck me as the outstanding singer tonight and the soprano has no solo in this work .
After the interval the Brandenburg No2 - played with consummate virtuosity especially as throughout the evening by the oboist Daniel Lanthier and the Fourth Lutheran Mass where Miss Bevan at least had a due with the alto ! . I knew neither Mass and was more impressed by the Fourth. An unusual but rewarding concert for the City Hall .
