    Halle/Gavrylyuk/Kamu 20.2.16

Good to see a nearly full house at Sheffield City Hall tonight.

Opening with Don Juan - an affectionate well played account if perhaps lacking a degree of excitement . To follow came that old warhorse the Grieg Piano Concerto with Alexander Gavrylyuk . There was a lot of fine playing but there was something very episodic about the performance but there was a deal of tenderness too .The audience loved it though including applause after the first movement ! Which did not go down well with the season ticket holders .

No such solecisms during the Sibelius 5 that followed . Conducted without a score by Kamu his experience and love of the music shone through . It was superbly balanced , wonderful bassoon playing in particular and I love the finale the brass was somehwhat restrained at the start but it was built wonderfully to the final thwacks . Great performance and am now very tempted by the Kamu cycle recently released on BIS .

I bought the Kamu and Rattle set with birthday money and love them both. The Kamu set is very fine indeed.

Has anyone any views on the sound in Sheffield City Hall at the front of the stalls? My experience there was quite negative, whereas in the much maligned RAH, being at the front of the Arena/Stalls sounds rather good.
