One what? Ball, perhaps? (given that so much of the content of NYDCs feature music first performed in ballrooms)...

There are times when I wonder if you ought to be given the sac. In the meantime, however, mightn't you be better employed contributing to the thread about New Year's Honours Listings rather than one on New Year's Day Concerts, MrGongGong?...(!)...

As usual I'm looking forward to the New Year's Day Concert as the Wiener Philharmoniker respond well to Mariss Jansons.

It's just occurred to me that the 1st of January is not complete without me shouting 'get those bloody ballet dancers off and let's see the orchestra!

I am not the only one then!
"...the isle is full of noises,
Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not.
              Sometimes a thousand twangling instruments
Will hum about mine ears, and sometime voices..."

Not wishing to show dissent on such a festive occasion, but the dancers are usually better looking than the orchestral players.

Have you seen the Vienna Phil's new first bassoon?

The answer is no. Should I? Presumably s/he is stuck at the back though.

I see that the TV pages of the RT claim that the programme of music is 'yet to be nailed'. Perhaps someone should have looked at the 3 column inches listing the music on the radio pages.... Each time I hear this concert I'm reminded of the time I played in a Christmas concert that included a selection from this repertoire. The viola part was hardly challenging - but navigating the many repeats, D.C. al fine etc on what seemed like an A5 size sheet of music did need a certain amount of concentration.
