    It's all in the balance

Last night, I listened to the Sibelius Violin Concerto - that is to say, I listened to the Helsinki orchestra playing the accompaniment to the Sibelius Violin Concerto.

From time to time, little snatches of the solo part, played by the talented Miss Christel Lee.emerged from the cacophany of drums and heavy bass "accompaniment".

When are BBC going to get this balance problem sorted out? Miss Lee is certainly no Ida Haendel, but, apart from those difficult "Top to bottom" leaps in the finale, she sounded well in command of the piece.

Was this transmission in the hands of BBC Midland Region or some outside contractor?

Disappointing. After a few bars from the Karelia Suite, I gave up.

We can only get the BBC over here in low bit rate, so I gave up listening a while ago, but Out of curiosity, do you listen to a digital or analog transmission?

I don't think digital vs analogue is the issue here. Balance is balance however it is reproduced. I didn't hear the broadcast. but I suspect we heard a natural concert hall balance, which is what I generally prefer (rather than the Perlman mike-in-the-violin effect). However, when experienced live, the visual often compensates for the occasional swamping of the soloist, so in a recording or broadcast a little tasteful help from the engineers is occasionally appropriate.

There is a noticeable difference in the FM vs digital feed of our main station, WFMT, although I suspect this is not the cause of HS issue. Still, I wonder what kind of a feed he uses
