Live is back - Victoria from Sherborne Abbey

Great to see the live concert back this Tuesday evening at 7.30pm. And a good one to start with - Victoria sung by The Sixteen from Sherborne Abbey. I shall try to catch as much of it as I can. Let's hope this opening choice augurs well for plenty of variety in both type of music and venue. The following week seems a cracker, featuring broadcasts from the Newbury Spring Festival, Chipping Campden Festival and on Friday a concert to die for - Herreweghe conducting Collegium Vocale Gent and some tip-top soloists in Bach's B Minor Mass. Things are definitely looking up on Radio 3!

I don't listen to much Renaissance polyphony nowadays, and only know a handful of Victoria's larger-scale works, like the Tenebrae and Missa Vidi Speciosam. Can anyone give a few pointers to Tuesday night's music?

    Live from Sherborne Abbey, Dorset

    Presented by Petroc Trelawny

The great Spanish composer Tomás Luis de Victoria died 400 years ago, and to mark the anniversary, The Sixteen, conducted by Harry Christophers, are touring the country with a "Choral Pilgrimage" dedicated to his work. Victoria was one of the most significant composers of the Counter-Reformation, and his music expresses the passion of Spanish religious mysticism.

    Tomás Luis de Victoria (1548 - 1611)

    Salve Regina a 5

Kyrie & Gloria from "Missa Alma Redemptoris Mater" a 8

    Alma Redemptoris Mater a 5
    Hymn Ave Maris Stella
    Gaude Maria Virgo

    Magnificat octavi toni

    Alma Redemptoris Mater a 8

    Congratulamini mihi a 6
    Sancta Maria
    Ne timeas Maria

    Vidi speciosam a 6

Sanctus from "Missa Alma Redemptoris Mater" a 8

    Litaniae Beatae Mariae a 8

Lovely concert - isn't it wonderful to have concerts again?

...and all set off so perfectly by the relevant, well-integrated interval talk on Blackpool and The Beatles at Abbey Road...
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

Lovely indeed to have live back again but, dear Mr Christophers, why do you leave Salisbury off your Pilgimages? Are we that sinful?

Lovely indeed. & it's so disappointing that they won't be perfroming in Glasgow Cathedral this year - it was so special hearing them there a couple of years ago. Greyfriar's in Edinburgh is a bit lacking in atmosphere by comparison.

Lovely to hear them in Liverpool, too.

But I missed this broadcast, and I can't find it anywhere on Listen Again! What should I be looking under?

                    jean,

I can't help you there as I always navigate to programmes via the Weekly Schedule and then click on them, etc to get to Listen Again. It seems much more straightforward, at least to me.

The link to the weekly R3 schedule is: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/programmes/schedules

I see - I've been using 'Programmes A - Z' and it doesn't seem to be there at all.

Bye the way, listening originally live to the HD sound I noticed a short dropout in the sound of around 2 seconds towards the end of the Magnificat. I've just checked the Listen Again and the same thing occurs so I wonder whether it was a problem with the live transmission between Sherbourne and ... where ever it was transmitted to before before being broadcast.

Did anyone hear the glitch on FM or DAB?

It is probably just one of those gremlins that live broadcasts from places like Sherbourne are more at risk of (if my supposition is correct).

I certainly heard one big 'dropout' listening via Freeview but can't now recall whereabouts it came.
I keep hitting the Escape key, but I'm still here!

The drop-out was on FM as well. Been listening to it on my iPod all week during my train journey to and from work. Splendid stuff.
